Guide us, care for us, and teach us your ways, so we might better do for one another as you have done for us.

Lord, lead us to peace
We are so tired Lord, and we have struggled with our fears and our resentments for too long.
Show us the way O Lord, lead us to peace.

Forgive us Lord, for we have sinned.
We have allowed technology to command our focus and fracture our attention.
We have closed our hearts and isolated ourselves, retreating from our fellow citizens.
We have followed the false gods of money and power and celebrity, and so lost our way.
Free us O Lord to see our world as it is; open our eyes to its needs.
Free us O Lord from our loneliness; help us create connected, resilient communities.
Return us O Lord to the right paths; help us to ensure the safety, the tranquility, the dignity of all.
Let us heed your admonition to turn from evil and do good, to seek and pursue peace. (Ps 34:14)

Lord, we know you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. (Nehemiah 9:17).
Stick with us, and guide us Lord, despite our quarrelsome ways.
Give us the humility to seek out different points of view, to find the wisdom in others. (Proverbs 15:22)
Turn us from those who feed hate and fear and resentment, and towards those who are willing to come together, reason together, and find a path forward together.
Help us to be both merciful and just, ensuring the accountability necessary to protect our future.
Put us on the path of a peace founded on empathy, equality and good governance, for we know this brings both joy and prosperity.
Help us to repent, to learn from our sins, and to be better than we are.

Thank you Lord for our democracy holding and a peaceful transfer of power.
Help us to recommit to democratic values,* repair our foundations, and rebuild.
Turn us from the sins of anger, hate, factionalism, and resentment. (Galatians 5:20)
Lead us in your paths of justice, kindness, and mercy. (2 Chronicles 7:14; Ps. 25:4-5; Galatians 22-23)
May we, in the words of our Vice President,** emerge from our trials with new wisdom, imagining new possibilities. Help us to open our hearts to one another.
May we, with your help, be so zealous and successful at pursuing your justice and peace that we, like Hezekiah and his people, find ourselves rejoicing at the speed of our progress. (2 Chronicles 29:36).

As we start a new year, we share the following prayer from the encyclical “All Brothers” published by Pope Francis on October 3, 2020. The encyclical provides guidance for our civic lives. The prayer is titled “An Ecumenical Christian Prayer” and appears following paragraph 287. Let us commit ourselves to caring for one another and strengthening our communities.
O God, Trinity of love,
from the profound communion of your divine life,
pour out upon us a torrent of fraternal love.
Grant us the love reflected in the actions of Jesus,
in his family of Nazareth,
and in the early Christian community.
Grant that we Christians may live the Gospel,
discovering Christ in each human being,
recognizing him crucified
in the sufferings of the abandoned
and forgotten of our world,
and risen in each brother or sister
who makes a new start.
Come, Holy Spirit, show us your beauty,
reflected in all the peoples of the earth,
so that we may discover anew
that all are important and all are necessary,
different faces of the one humanity
that God so loves. Amen.
